NOPENG KINEK

Nopeng Kinek is a newly created dance based on the bergendang (playing the drum) activity among the Malays in the olden days. Nopeng Kinek is usually performed at weddings, official ceremonies and stage performances. Nopeng means playing with masks. Whie dancing, the Malays in the olden days would put on masks. As substitute to a real mask, male dancers cover their faces with a batik or pelikat cloth. Their partners will also put on masks. Kinek is a Sarawak Malay word for now/current. Bermukun or bernopeng has been synonymous with the Sarwak Malay community for generations. It is usually performed in the evening before the bersanding ceremony (during wedding reception) and could last until dawn.
