THE CULTURE AND CUSTOM OF THE BISAYA ETHNIC MYSTICAL BELIEF: THE "ALAI BUBU"" DANCE"

The Bisayas that mostly live in the Beaufort district in Sabah Interior Division believe the mystic that is associated with the bubu (fish trap). It is said that the bubu can dance when certain mantras are recited to it. This dance is performed by six dancers, four pengalai that hold the bubu, four musicians and two singers.

According to the beliefs of this ethnic that previously practiced animism, when the husband or the wife passes away the living spouse is placed together inside the bubu and they are thrown into the sea. Then the faith healer appeases and calls upon the spirit of the bubu to surface to the seaside to meet the relatives or villagers and to cure the sick at that time. The faith healer recites a number of mantras in the course of his action.
